“dista de Checkn!”

AIDS has become a very familiar disease for gay people and communities. If you want to know whether you are infected or not, you can take a free anonymous test at a public health center or pay for a test at a clinic or hospital. But in some cases, your schedule doesn’t match, and in other cases, there is an accessibility issue.
So, MASH Osaka created opportunities for people to get tested for HIV and syphilis to create an “easily accessible testing environment” in the community.
The number of newly reported HIV patients in Kinki region in 2016 was 164 Japanese males, 6 Japanese females, 14 foreign national males, and one foreign national female. (From a report by the Committee on AIDS Trends)
As these figures show the number of people who have been found to be infected with HIV through tests or by medical institutions, some expect that the actual number of people infected with HIV may be much higher.
Nowadays, if you find out as early as possible that you are infected with HIV, you can continue your life as before by visiting a specialized medical institution and receiving appropriate treatment while learning about your condition. You can also use the services of medical cost reduction programs, and you can consult with experts and friends who are living in a similar situation by phone or in person.
If you have any questions about this testing session or concerns about the test, we can listen to you at dista.
Why don’t you take this opportunity to get tested?

What’s “Pitatto Checkn” …

  • Free and anonymous testing is available at dista in the same way as public health centers.
  • If the number of people wishing to get tested exceeds the capacity, we may not be able to accept them.
  • A syphilis test can also be taken at the same time.
  • This test will be conducted in collaboration with MASH Osaka, Osaka City and the Osaka AIDS Prevention Week Executive Committee.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about the test, we are always happy to listen to you. Please contact us at dista.

Organized by: MASH Osaka (dista) / Osaka City Public Health Center
Cooperation: AIDS Prevention Foundation

Flow of “Pitatto Checkn”

~From reception to blood sampling~

This is the system where you first swipe your finger a few times tightly “pitatto” to register with your visit at this test session using biometric authentication (fingerprint).
After the registration, we will issue an ID sticker, which you will be asked to affix to the forms of your test application, appointment, or questionnaire.

  • Registration is voluntary, so if you feel uncomfortable with the process of swiping your finger, you can skip it and just use the test.
  • We don’t ask for your name or address when you register.
  • Your fingerprints and your information on the questionnaire will be used only for this test session and will never be used for any other purposes.
  • You can cancel your test at any time during the process, and even then, any disadvantages will not occur as to notification of results or support.
  • The results of the questionnaire, together with the test results, will be analyzed in a completely anonymous manner and may be presented at academic conferences, but your privacy will be absolutely protected because no one can ever be identified.

For easier access for anyone to take the test, “pitatto” has been introduced!

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that you get tested regularly (every six months to once a year) so that you can learn about the infection as early as possible. This is why we have created a system that makes testing more easily accessible and allows people to learn when they were last tested through registration. With biometric authentication (fingerprint), there is no need to issue a membership card, so your information is securely protected, and you don’t have to worry about losing it.

MASH Osaka hopes to continue to provide accessible testing sessions near the city. By observing each person’s condition for as long as possible, based on the test results registered through biometrics (fingerprints), we can get a more reliable picture of HIV and syphilis infection status, awareness of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV, and sexual health of the gay community as a whole.

In doing so, we hope to apply the results to MASH Osaka’s future activities.
In order to continue this activity into the future, the staff will ask you to participate in this system when you take the test.
If you have any concerns, you are welcome to talk to us at dista anytime.
Your privacy will be completely protected as you are guaranteed never to be identified.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Flow of “Pitatto Checkn”

~From reception to blood sampling~

No reservation is necessary.
Your temperature and physical condition will be checked at the reception desk.
Please refrain from taking the test if you have a fever or feel ill.

  • After reporting at the reception, you will be given a brief explanation about the test of the day.
  • After receiving a brief explanation and filling out the check sheet, please confirm your appointment date to pick up the results.
  • After that, you will have your blood drawn in turn.
  • Lastly, make sure that the bleeding has stopped. If you like, you can fill out the questionnaire during this time. The entire procedure will take about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the situation of the day.

It is now estimated that about 30 percent of gay and bisexual men have gotten tested in the past year. You may run into someone you know. In such cases, you can spend time at dista drinking tea and talking as usual. If you don’t want anyone to know that you are going to be tested, or if you feel uncomfortable meeting people you know while you are waiting, we recommend that you take the test at a clinic or a public health center. If you need any information, you can always ask dista staff for support.

~A day when the result will be notified one week later~

The results will be notified in a meeting room near dista.
Please note that the notification location is not dista.
For more details, please refer to the pamphlet given at the time of blood sampling.

  • At the reception, we will check your number and guide you in turn.
  • You will then review the results together with us in a private room one by one.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about the test or infections, you can consult with us at that time.

At this time, only staff from the public health center will be present. Please note that there will be no MASH Osaka or dista staff there. Also, please rest assured that neither MASH Osaka staff nor dista staff will ever know the results of individual tests.

Test results are handled with great care as important privacy of the person being tested among the professional staff involved in the test. We have prepared a private area with a door where you can check your test results. This will allow you to take the test with peace of mind.

If you took the test together with your friend or met someone you know, you might feel curious about their results. If you feel that you want to talk about yourself, make sure that both of you are very sure that the other person wants to talk, and then try to create an environment where both of you can talk in a relaxed way. The important thing is that you decide what to do by yourself.

We, dista, will be open as usual from 5 p.m. on days when the results are notified, as well.

If you have any problems or concerns, dista staff are always happy to talk to you. We can also introduce you to places where you can talk about infectious diseases and sexuality. Please feel free to speak to us anytime.

What’s the difference between HIV and AIDS?

Strictly speaking, HIV and AIDS are different from one another. This may sound a bit confusing, but “HIV” stands for “human immunodeficiency virus,” which is a virus that weakens the immune system when it infects humans. The term “HIV” refers to the virus itself. On the other hand, AIDS means acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. If you are infected with HIV, your immune system becomes weaker and weaker, making you more susceptible to diseases caused by weak germs and viruses that would not cause any problems in a healthy person, and making you harder to recover from them. That’s when you’re diagnosed as “having AIDS.”

Nowadays, if you are found to be infected with HIV early enough, you can get treatment at a specialized medical institution. You can continue to live your everyday life as before, as long as you know your condition together with your doctor and receive treatment. You can also take advantage of the services of medical cost reduction programs and consult with specialists and friends who are living in similar conditions by phone or in person. Please feel free to ask for information at dista.

Types of HIV tests

Normally, it is possible to find out if you are infected with HIV by taking an HIV antibody test, which consists of two steps: a screening test and a confirmatory test of blood samples.

First, you will be tested with a screening test to see if you are infected with HIV. If you don’t test positive, you will have a negative HIV test result (you are not infected with HIV). If you do test positive, you will be tested again to confirm whether you are infected or not. If you test positive, then you will have “a positive HIV test result.”

The usual test takes a week from the time the test is taken to the time the results are given. Some laboratories offer same-day tests (rapid tests) where you can get the results within 30 minutes to 2 hours after the test. The advantage of the same-day tests is that you can get the results quickly, but in very rare cases, you may get a positive test result even though you are not infected. This is called a false positive, and you will need to take another confirmation test. In this case, you will be told “let’s check again” and you will be told the result a week later. Please keep in mind thata positive test result does not necessarily mean a positive result in the same-day tests.

This time, dista de Pitatto Checkn providesnormal tests. After the test, the results will be notified a week later at the same time slot, so please check your schedule in advance.

What’s a Window Period?

The HIV antibody test checks whether antibodies to HIV have been developed in the blood sample and determines whether the test result is positive or negative. If antibodies are already developed, you will have a positive test result (a status of being infected with HIV), but it is said that it takes about 8 weeks for the antibodies to be developed and confirmed by the test after infection.

It is recommended that you get tested 8 weeks after having sex with a person suspected of being infected in order to get accurate results.

In this way, the approximately eight-week period from the time of infection until antibodies are developed is called a “window period..”

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)

There are many diseases that can be infected through sex, andeven if you are infected, it doesn’t mean you will have symptoms. Even if you don’t have any symptoms, you could transmit the disease to someone else if you have sex with him or her while you are infected. Most sexually transmitted diseases can be treated, but there are some diseases that you have to live with for the rest of your life.

*If you want to know more.

Also,if you have other sexually transmitted infections (STI) such as syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and herpes, you have a much higher chance of contracting HIV. And there’s a pretty good chance that you can get infected even if you’ve only had sex once.

Sexually transmitted diseases are more familiar than people think. But most of them can be prevented by using condoms correctly, and you won’t even infect your partner! Learn more about sexually transmitted diseases and enjoy sex!

About Syphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a pathogen called treponema! The pathogen enters the bloodstream through small wounds on the skin or mucous membranes and spreads throughout the body. The initial symptom is a lump about the size of cartilage that forms in the skin or mucous membrane of the infected area, and the center of the lump becomes hard and inflated. If left untreated, the pathogen will spread throughout the body, and in about three months after infection, pink circular bruises, reddish brown patches, and hair loss symptoms will occur. If left untreated further, a large lump will form on the skin, and in the end, there will be serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, nerves, and eyes.

Syphilis had been considered incurable until the discovery of penicillin and should not be taken lightly! It is said that anal sex is the most common cause of syphilis infection, and if you have syphilis lesions in your mouth, you can also infect others through kissing. It’s difficult to know whether you have syphilis if you don’t see any lesions, so it’s important to get tested regularly.

Treatment of syphilis can be provided at clinics, but you need to be aware that if you are infected with syphilis and have lesions on the skin, there is a very high chance of contracting HIV.Even if you have sex just once, there is a good chance that you will get infected.

*If you want to know more.
What can you do when you find out you have HIV?

If you find out that you are infected with HIV as a result of the test, you can consult with the testing organization or get a referral to a hospital from them and will start thinking about your future life. There are many institutions available where you can consult if you have any concerns or problems!

Some of these counseling facilities are available not only to people with HIV but also to those around them. Also, there are telephone counseling services for people with HIV as well as face-to-face counseling, and you can choose your preferred method of counseling and time slot. Besides, there are face-to-face meetings available only to people with HIV. On websites, you can exchange information on support and counseling. If you find out that you are infected, please stay calm and consult with staff at dista.

What’s Safer SEX?

In English, the word “safe” means to be “secure.” So, “Safer Sex” means a more secure sex. As it’s hard to have perfectly safe sex, it means as safe a sex as possible. This is why each person has his or her own ways of having “Safer Sex.”There are many ways to have sex, depending on how the physical condition and feelings of you and your partner are, and how long you have known your partner! The three most important points are:

  • 1)Learn about by what act and through what route HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases infect others.
  • 2)Think about what methods you might be able to use during or before having sex.
  • 3)Talk about methods with your partner, if possible.

Safer sex can take many forms, depending on how you and your partner feel and where you have sex. There are many different types of condoms, and it is important to know what kind of condom is best for you. Try to find a condom that works for you and your partner, and you can enjoy sex more!

What’s U=U?

U=U is an acronym for Undetectable equals Untransmittable, which is new information that HIV cannot be transmitted to someone else if the amount of HIV in the blood is so low that it cannot be found by testing for more than six months.

A worldwide campaign is now in progress to spread this new information. If HIV can be controlled with treatment, there is now almost no chance of infecting a sexual partner.

In other words, HIV positive isn’t the same as the source of infection. Even if you are found to be HIV positive, there is no longer any need to give up on love and sex. Even if you are found to be HIV positive, you can still live your life as before as long as you continue to take your medication and see a doctor regularly. But it may be that if you develop AIDS without realizing you are infected, you won’t be able to go to work, and you’ll have to explain it to your family...

U=U information is information that helps you realize that if you are infected, the sooner you know and start treatment, the greater the benefit.

U=U doesn’t mean you don’t need to take precautions. This is because there are many sexually transmitted diseases. Syphilis, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis C, and many other sexually transmitted diseases exist. So, whether you know you are HIV positive, you’ve confirmed you are negative, or you’ve never gotten tested for HIV, everyone needs to choose the prevention method that best suits them.
